Ultimately I think what is needed is a compact (LED) modular assembly where the lamp can be re-mounted in a number of pre-determined positions. Whether anybody likes the look of the current solution is, in a way irrelevant. The rules are rules and the architecture of the car challenges those rules. The modular approach could help with both the practical needs and potentially the aesthetics.
As far as styling go's...the lamp unit needs either to have a more 'classic' aesthetic and/or be camouflaged into a 'thing' that doesn't particularly look like a lamp....integrate it into the filler cap, for example, or the boss for the spare wheel...a strap guide on the luggage rack....that sort of thing..

That lower height limit is interesting. It could in theory put the 'high' level light on the upper rear rail of a luggage rack... The top of the number plate is 14.5" from the ground, so "allowed", if a little stupid as it would put the light below the normal brake lights, which on Aldermog are centred at 19.5". But as a second LED brake light? Then when the top one is obscured there would still be one visible? I got the "rules" from the instructions supplied with an after market LED brake light, I think they need checking further. But fitting above the numberplate would be easy.

Unplug and remove, put back for MOT if you are worried it will fail.

I know I'm going to get comments but I like the high rear brake light! Its kind of funky and in its own way quite retro. There, that's kicked the hornets nest!

Had one on my +4. Quite happy with the shape, but not much use when rack loaded with luggage... Hence my thought of rear of rack, a little above brake lights but hanging off the back shouldn't get in the way of luggage/straps &c.

I not really worried what it looks like as long as it stops some HGV or short sighted car driver from rear ending me. Its an excellent safety feature which might just save your life or that of the passenger.

No, previous owner had that done. I was thinking of painting the drums on RTA a bright colour (had yellow paint available). Might still do those on the 'new' car...
