I had a problem with starting my 4/4 4 seater, so had my starter motor reconditioned. Fitted it back on but still had the problem. Went back to the reconditioners with it on the car, and they diagnosed a faulty ignition switch that sometimes worked and then fails occasionally.

Does anyone know what vehicle the ignition switch (where the key fits) comes from on a car of this age and where I might get one ? It has a 'BL' key so I thought it might be a mini, but have searched on the net and not found anything suitable.

Also, out of interest, for future reference, do you chaps know where the starter motor itself comes from as I also had problems buying a new one, hence I went down the reconditioning route. (car has the 1.6 CVH with 5 speed gearbox).

In Original Morgan it states that 1970s and early 1980s Morgans used Neimann ignition switches as found in MGBs and some Vauxhalls. I hope this may help but if not a call to the factory or Heart of England http://www.heartofenglandmorgans.co.uk/cgi-bin/viewPage.cgi?linkName=homePage should.

I believe they may be of the Triumph Herald/Vittess or some form of other Triumph. Hope this helps.

It's off an MGB. I recently got a replacement for my '86 4/4 from Gloucester MG Centre, cost me around 50 quid IIRC.

£50 ??!!! Just after posting the query, I called in at Mike Duncan's and he had one - said it was from a Landrover of some sort - and it cost me just under £100 for the full thing including two new keys !!!

Then it took me about 3.5 hours all in to fit the bloomin' thing ! And I had fun wiring it up because two out of 4 wires were different colours to the originals. Still, got it all on and it works a treat now. The starter motor definitely spins faster with the new switch and does not sit there going click click like it did before.

Thanks for the timely link. It appears I need one now too, I can't get the key out the lock any more which is a bit of a security issue.

Yup, that's the badger. Dunno if they fitted different ones after 1986, but that's exactly the right ignition/steering lock for an 86 model 4/4. I suspect they stuck with it until they changed the switchgear.
