We have some walkie talkies we use when driving the Morgans in convoy on trips.  , 3 of the kids, the daugthers boyfried & myself plan a holiday in Italy so we will need two hire cars. I thought to take the radios but wondered if they are legal to use without a license. Does anyone know?

If they are the 460Mhz (approx) low power units they are OK as this is an Eu licence free allocation.

They are legal across the eu.
We have used them for the last four years without problem.
First used at Le. Mans in 2010

For the law they are treated like telephones. The driver may not use them whilst driving unless they can be used hands free, which means they must have a VOX microphone.
Motorcycle intercoms that work hands free are ok.

Perhaps the BBC, as a broadcasting organisation, has an exemption, as do the forces.

Perhaps they do, but not a good example to give to viewers when using a hand held phone is illegal. Blimey ........I'm starting to sound like an old fart

Best way is to use the navvy, sorry navigator to operate the radio so the driver drivers, as my wife would say, men can only do one thing well at any one time. Women can do many, or so they claim. Lol.
