I'll just be boring and add that this is purely about marketing, and nothing to do with really actually making something like this for real...

It's one of the cheaper ways of generating mass press coverage these days - provide a press release for an invention of dubious / amazing potential (ideally somewhat contraversial and often just something on paper - this is unusual as they actually have a mock up!). Then watch the press advertise your business for you, and create a lot of 'water cooler' moments for people to talk about in the office.

As such, it's an incredibly effective way for SW to get their name out there, underline their core brand values (insurance only for women, and the pink and black branding) without spending a huge amount on another ad campaign.

Seems to be working rather well. On the other hand I don't think there is any danger whatsoever of the shoes ever hitting the market, the number of women drivers who would buy a special pair of shoes for driving in becuase they feel it's safer / more effective etc is pretty small, and that group probably already keep a pair of flats in the car already...
