I am beginning to hear an irritating vibration noise which I think originates from the exhaust box under the drivers seat of my 06 +4. All mounts are secure so I suspect the internal baffles are beginning to come adrift. I don't know if this is the original exhaust system but it looks in overall good condition. The current mileage is about 25k. The box is stainless steel, oval and about 800mm long and shows no external signs of damage/ corrosion. Duratec engine fitted.
I have been looking online but can't see an obvious replacement. Does anyone know of a website to help, and/or a good Mog exhaust replacement contact in the Skipton North Yorks area?

Not much help, but I read somewhere recently of a racing workshop who can open up stainless silencers and change the baffle system. Normally done for extra power, but could also be done to add baffles. If you can get it off and shake it you'll know for sure.

Don't know if it's the same but I recently changed the back section of a late model Duratec +4 for a TMer, I was convinced it was the main silencer from the sound but as soon as we had a good look (and a bang with the hand confirmed) it was the inner part of the rear 'resonator'. Just to confirm the diagnosis as much as anything when I had fitted the new rear section I drilled through the resonator from above and using a Chinese Finger (a flexible long nut/bolt holder) I inserted bolts from the inside and using a nut 'crushed' the baffle against the outer shell and the rattle stopped. Drilling from above means if refitted to the car it can't be seen. Afterwards I finished this bodge off by flashing some arc weld on the nuts to save them vibrating loose. It's not a clever or pretty fix but would get you home kind of fix and fun to play on a wet day ;-).

Get you home? Do you normally carry an arc welder with you?

Can you also feel it? I have vibration/resonate point that I suspect is coming from the silencer (Duratec) at about 3k rpm. I can feel it through the whole car. I twigged that it might be the silencer as I have just had a different manifold fitted and that moved the resonate spot by about 500 RPM. Also I had a flexi coupling added at the same time which made it even worse surprising so had that removed. Pondering what to do next but the thought of a little experimental key hole surgery had occurred to me.

Thanks for this useful info. I will check again. Significantly I had some earlier trouble with the rear section which forms the exhaust pipe. This has a liner of pierced metal plate. This was vibrating at certain revs and I managed to cure it with an injection of a small amount of Araldite.
The 'new' sound is different but it may well be from the same source but further up the pipe. I will have a closer look and maybe take off the units to give them a shake as Dave suggests.
The idea of securing the liner with bolts sounds good if the problem is there.

I once welded a steering wheel hub back together on a 3 month old Morgan when it sheared clean off in France......the place where we were having lunch had a waiter who's father was repairing his fence and had hired one.....I was in full panic mode but one amongst us lives in France so could do all the translation....got me out of trouble. In Italy I wondered into a garage with 2 pieces of my Harley exhaust and they let me weld it , you never know where you can borrow kit ;-)

Several others have had similar, as you well know.
My '97 +4 worried me a little - with occasional cracking sounds from the steering. Eventually I put it down to the Motolita wood rim wheel, which I never really liked...
