If its making a noise you know its still there and working, if its quiet it has probably broken of fallen off! excellent,LOL, good one  very good, noisy has it's benefits.

As I have only ever driven mine so have nothing to compare it with it is difficult to know what is excessive noise.
I have now got used to all the peculiarities of my particular car I can tell straight away if something just doesn't sound right.
So looks like I'm driving with my ears not just seat of the pants.

I'm going to echo ZackBilly on the "run don't walk" and change the bevel box oil ASAP!
I too experienced the black goo, and changing the oil cured a very nasty drivetrain rattle that had been developing - obviously due to poor lubrication from the goo...

Today my indicators stopped flashing, they would come on but not flash. So a trip to the local auto electrical suppliers sorted a new flasher relay and now all is well again.
