I loved my old MX5, inexpensive and great handling with no competitors. I like the new styling apart from the headlights giving it a scowl and it looks as though they are going keep the price reasonable still. It should be a great success.

I like the more aggressive look and I'm delighted it is smaller and lighter! The Lotus Elan was the bench mark for the Series 1 MX5 and it was, in my view, the best looking, until now!

For £20K a car 2 seater convertible that looks good, will have enough performance and will handle better than almost ever other "sports" car under made by major manufacturers.

What not to like?

Are we all a bit mental paying double the price for a similar product which is less refined, often problematic and has half the stuff?

Would I swap my Plus Four for one?

I think they are doing a really good job with the styling of their range now. I like the Mazda 6 when i see it on the road. The 7 MPV thing we rented at SFO last year was a very nice car to drive.

It is a little more aggressive than the traditional MX5 but given the lack of competition I think it should do well. You see a lot of older ones around so people clearly like to hang on to them.

Comparing it to VW EOS and other so called cheap 2 door open tops it is a good ownership proposition. I like the EOS but its is expensive, will probably cost more to run and not as much fun to drive.

Couldn't agree more. My cousin bought a 2 litre one of the early 3rd generation when they first came out in about 2006 & it's been brilliant. It lives on the street in Islington. He's never had any problems with it & it's suffered no water ingress at all. He's very quick in it (well, he did do the police advanced driver course when he was in the met...) and in my experience it's a hoot to drive.

I'd bet that almost all of those who dismiss the MX5 as a "hairdresser's car" have never driven one, or even been for a ride. In my book it's a proper sports car and encapsulates a lot of what the whole sports car thing is about.

I seem to rather like "hairdressers cars" I've enjoyed MX5's Z3's and now an Audi TT.......all accused by some of being such cars. I've spent the afternoon driving the ultimate hairdressers car ....the Plus8 Speedster! The state of my hair afterwards NEEDED a hairdresser!

I'll be interested to see what the Italians do with the styling.....

Little Barge

I always thought the rear of the barchetta was very pretty, but found the front poorly resolved - a bit too much of the sad bulldog about it with it's droopy jowls.
