Just used contact spray on relay connections, checked airflow pipe to ECU and connections on fuel pump..

I then put a booster back on the battery and it fired up, strange...

However it got me thinking that having the following spare would be useful.

ECU for 96 +4
AirFlow Sensor
Temp Sensor
Crankshaft sensor
Fuel Relay
Fuel Pump

Anyone know if the ECU is morgan specific or a particular rover one, rarther than just a Rover 820 from the period.
Thanks,
Will

Hi Flyfisher, the ECU is a Rover item, there are several types so best to unplug and check the label. I have just checked on the note i made at the time i was having similar problems to you and the code on mine is MKC10034E(YN). 93 +4 T16
They are available on Ebay reconditioned.
It reminded me that i found the cause of the stalling and rough running and it was not the ECU but a faulty ignition switch that was intermittently causing a cut out.
Try 'carefully wiggling the connections when ticking over see if it stalls.
Just something else to eliminate before you double up on everything. Worth carrying a set of relays though. Regards john k

Now it's running you can do the diagnostics I've been doing and wiggle everything to see if you can reproduce the coughing.

The ECU regularly fail. Be aware also that any airleaks really screw up how it works. On mine the pipe to the ECU from the inlet manifold perished & fuel consumption instantly doubled.

Hi Will,

I'd be surprised if it was the crank position sensor, as if these play up the car doesn't usually start at all.
The relays for the fuel pump, ignition, and starter are all within the relay module, which is a black box attached to the bulkhead about the size of a packet of fags. If you need to replace this, they're readily available either secondhand on ebay or new, as they're the same as fitted to MGF's (Part No YWB100970).
Before you go replacing the ECU, have your original one tested. When my 1999 +4 was playing up (sometimes it would start, other times it wouldn't - it turned out to be the starter motor in the end) I took mine to ECU Testing Ltd in Heanor, Derbys. (www.ecutesting.com). They put them through all sorts of tests for about £55.
Hope you get it sorted.

Hi,
For the ECU my code is MKC 10115 04544104

For a spare replacement do I need one that matches exactly or just MKC 10115 .....

Thanks,
Will

So turns out it is just MKC 10115, bought a replacement for £30 on ebay, as back up.

Just need a crankshaft sensor as backup, ordered replacement relays

Flyfisher, hello. I have just picked up on this thread. I experienced something similar last year which had me baffled for three weeks. I replaced the crank sensor
and all the usual suspects but my head was telling me that it was ignition and so it turned out to be. The relay. So carrying spare relays for fuel and ignition is vital. To be sure I replaced both on the firewall inside. Just a thought.

Have similar problem appears to be immobiliser first hit wont sart set immobiliser on then off and turn key starts first time, may be fuel prssure as it builds up when turning on and off.

Now I have what appears to be a rattle noise from water pump will replace and see what happens
