That's what I did (well, not exactly that, but I asked for the guys mending my exhaust to do the "strongest" job they could). And I also told them I wasn't worried with how it looked, function before form.

But in all honesty I don't think making the exhaust structure stronger at the breaking point will solve this. This particular breaking point is different from the first.

So ... if that particular weld gets stronger, the vibration and resonance will just find a third weak spot.

I do believe the mounts are incorrectly placed, and also that there must be a flexible section before the silencer. But I'm not an engineer and it's not up to me to do Morgan's job.

Exhausts needed a bobin near this point or near the flexible.

I don't understand why the mounting points are different to the standard car. Why can't they mount it in exactly the same way, albeit taking into account the different shape box?

MDH seems to have hit the nail on the head, it is more than likely the resonance of the whole system that is causing the problems. Whilst I have many years experience of 2 stroke exhaust design, I cannot understand why the exhaust on the cars I have looked at is so firmly attached, it needs some flexibility to dampen out the resonance/harmonics, it could be just the rubber mounts that need modifying and their positioning.On a lot of our race bikes the entire exhaust system is held on with just a couple of springs and rarely do we have any problems.

Just a thought, I wonder if anyone has measured the amount of movement on the engine in various working conditions and the amount the exhaust mountings allow movement. Half an inch movement on the engine and quarter of inch on the exhaust mountings could equal broken pipes.

Quick update: My exhaust has been mended, I'm going to Caramulo this weekend to get the car and bring it to Lisbon. It's not a polished job, just enough to make it do the journey (about 300kms) and wait for the new exhausts MMC will send.

Here what it looks like now, before being mounted onto the car. Since the crack is mostly in the "inwards" side of the silencer it will only be noticed by the ones looking for it.




Meanwhile, a funny story. My car was supposed to be on display during a reception for the new UK ambassador that took place yesterday at the "British Council" in Lisbon. The portuguese dealer, a good friend by now, was going to have there his own "oldish" Plus8 too, and he was devastated that the car was still in Caramulo (there's no other M3W in Portugal). The only thing I could offer in consolation was my own Plus4. He took that offer, so here a few pics from yesterday's very "classy" event

Still waiting for the new exhausts, apparently some have been delivered but they don't fit so the wait goes on, presumably some pillock made them in thicker steel but forgot to increase the circumference. Would rather wait and it be right than have another set that breaks. I have faith and the love of Jesus in my heart.
