IF YOU WANT TO GO FAST BUY A MOTOR BIKE....THE SLOWEST WILL PROBABLY BE FASTER THAN 95% OF CARS Apart from your C12, of course

Aeros are very long geared. Autobahn running can be embarassing if you try to pull high speed acceleration in 6th (90-140mph) - it needs nudging down 1 or 2 cogs.
Saying that the ratios do seem to suit the cars fantastic A-road ability - IE hold higher gears when loping along around the speed limit enjoying better economy - and then nudged down to make full use of the broad torque band.
0-60 is irrelevent

I found that my old Caterham CSR260 [approx. 440bhp per ton] could keep up with most 'superbikes' in a straight line, and was always faster in the corners, but lost out in traffic, when a bike needs less space to overtake. it would also do the 0 - 60 thing in around 3.5 seconds, but it had so much torque that when cruising at 80, say, in 5th, it only needed more throttle to quickly get up to and exceed 100, no gearchanges.

(No its not, its a hippopotamus) These are what I found quoted as the ratios for the Getrag box in the Aero and for the ZF 6HP26, which I suspect is what is used by MMC as it was used by BMW on the 7 series. (Anyone know for sure?) ............M...........A 1st gear: 4.05:1.....4.17:1 2nd gear: 2.4:1......2.34:1 3rd gear: 1.58:1.....1.52:1 4th gear: 1.19:1.....1.14:1 5th gear: 1:1.........0.87:1 6th gear: 0.87:1.....0.69:1 Final drive: BTR Limited slip 3.08:1 is quoted for the manual, I'm assuming it is the same for the auto, again does anyone know for sure? So the manual 6th is very much an Overdrive and on the auto both 5th and 6th are overdrives. This probably explains the much improved MPG and CO2 figures quoted for the auto version. For real world driving 2nd to 4th are the most usable, but as Ken says, waffling along at 50 to 60 the auto version is probably in 6th, giving close to 30mpg...

Having done long journeys recently - a steady 70-80mph cruise returns 33mpg If driven on the low-end torque the economy is pretty good - mine has averaged 26mpg since I got it at the end of March.

Ken, very encouraging: better than the Roadster! I found this list of cars that use the same gearbox: 2001–2008 BMW E65/E66 7 Series 2002–2005 Jaguar XK8/XKR 2003–2008 Jaguar S-Type 2004–2009 Jaguar XJ 2003–present BMW E63/E64 6 Series 2003–present Range Rover 2003-2012 Rolls-Royce Phantom (2003) 2007-present Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupé 2004–2006 BMW E53 X5 V8 2003–present BMW E60 5 Series 2005–present BMW E90 3 Series 2005–present Land Rover Discovery 2005–present Ford Falcon (BF, FG) 2005–present Ford Territory (SY & SY II AWD; SZ RWD) 2005–2008 Lincoln Navigator 2006–present Jaguar XK/XKR 2006–present Range Rover Sport 2007–present BMW E70 X5 2007–2012 Maserati Quattroporte 2008–2012 BMW F01/02 7 Series (except 760i/Li and Hybrid 7) 2008–2011 Kia Mohave 2009–2011 Hyundai Genesis V8 4.6L 2009–present Jaguar XF 2006-2009 Bentley Arnage 2008-2011 Bentley Brooklands Also found some disagreement on the web about oil changes. BMW state that the box needs no servicing: ZF state a 50,000 mile change is needed, and more often if the box gets hot. The fluid is unique to ZF. Otherwise it seems to be virtually unburstable. The box is fading from use as it isn't able to work with "stop/start systems", the new ZF 9 Speed box.... This is the makers web link: ZF

Years ago, a tv motoring programme investigated quick starts with admitted boy racers behind the wheel. Most regarded they had done a quick time when they were perhaps with 3 seconds of the claimed figure. And I think that is still true. I can usually equal or better the claim but I do have to lock away my mechanical sympathy, so as a rule, only ever done on track.
If you really want to find out what your car will do, I am happy to wring its neck for you. But you really won't like it as there will be some serious wear and tear on the clutch and tyres with a far bit of strain imposed on any transmission bits. I'd imagine CerealSurfer could also make you that offer.
Technique for a 4/4 with the last engine I fitted to Woodstock. Engage first gear and clean rear wheels with a bit of spin. Wind engine up to 4000 rpm and slip clutch a very small amount to take all slack out of the transmissionvv. Sidestep the clutch pedal and keep revs at 4000 until tyres stop spinning and then up to just over 6000 rpm before you engage second gear.
