First let me explain that my dealer pointed this switch out to me and second it seems to work just as a rheostat should

As above on my 1999 +8 as far as the dimmer switch is concerned.

Graham, you can't imagine, my gauge lights have indeed some more steps in between. BTW on LHD cars the knob is on the very left under the board. Took me two years as well... Heinz - you're very lucky they didn't leave it on the right hand side!

Just a thought guys: I moved mine onto the facia, just to the right of where the speedo was before I moved it. Easy to do.
