During these dark days i find the degree of lightening of the dashboard gauges somewhat insufficient
Is there a way to change the bulbs to LED light bulbs
There are a sufficient number of companies on the market offering any kind of LED light
But ........ do you have to remove the dashboard completely?

Just a thought but there will be a small knurled wheel hidden under the dash that when turned will increase/decrease the brightness of the dash lights. Have you found this as on maximum they are pretty bright even when driving in town under artificial light and in the countryside I have to turn mine to minimum to avoid being dazzled.

It was three years before I found it on my last car. Had no idea it had a dimmer until I had to take the dash off to replace the windscreen washer hose that had split and leaking water in the footwell every time I washed the screen. Even when I found it I wasn't sure what it did at first!

For info .this knob is located under the dash to the right of the steering column on my 4/4. There does not appear to be any mention of this in the manual.i initially thought it was a remote volume knob for the radio. I am not surprised some do not discover it for a while

It's usual effect is either gauge lights full on, or off, with little in between! smile

Graham, you can't imagine, my gauge lights have indeed some more steps in between. BTW on LHD cars the knob is on the very left under the board. Took me two years as well...

The heat produced by the standard instrument lights is essential for demisting the instruments. Hence, LEDs are not a good idea in this application.

The VDO dials on the new GDIs and the Plus 8 have a white light that may well be LED.

The under dash dimmer seems, as ever, to have about three settings:

Off
Bright
Something in between...

On my BMW there is a similar control, but it produces a gradual change from dim to bright.
On my MacBook there are buttons that change the brightness of the screen (F1& F2)in a similar way and a separate set of buttons (F5 & F6) that alter the brightness of the lights in the keys...

How hard can it be?
