The rabbit's running with George at Powerlite as I've sent some photos of the old unit. As it appears to have been built in 1989 it is probably due a change!
As for earthing I got a 3.5m length of nice thick cable to earth the battery to the same point as the engine earth - a Northampton Motorsport recommendation when I got the engine remapped.

Well case solved - its a starter motor for a Leyland Sherpa van. LRS713. No one seems to do an uprated version - can't for the life of me understand why - is there no Sherpa racing? So had to resort to the NOS route. Fitment due when its not freezing/pouring with rain.

Fossey, when it's fitted if it still doesn't spin up fast enough consider the trick we used with the FX4 Taxi which was notoriously difficult to start in winter. If you can find room fit two 12v batteries wired to provide 12v but double the amps.

Well case well and truly solved. New starter motor LRS713 and the damn great earth wire to the front and the car started first pull on the frosty Saturday morning.
So now for:
a - some driving
b - some serious ungraditis - spotlights and a nice discrete dash without the acres of plasticware.
