Now I think with the aid of "Tinypic" I should be able to add some images to this blurb, I thought I would show what I am doing by way of mods to my M3W,

I have always considered it useful to know what the oil temperature and pressure is at any time, and to this end I have mounted an SPA digital dual display gauge on the dash so that it is visible through the steering wheel.
The guage is connected to the sender units which are mounted in a sandwich plate that mounts between the oil filter and the engine casting.

I am not a great lover of the appearance of the cooling pack provided by the factory so have decided to do my own. This consists of a pair of 140mm diameter SPAL fans mounted on a vertical stainlees steel plate with the fans positioned one behind each cylinder.

The fans blow onto the cylinders and seem to work well. They are wired independant of the ignition and are switched on by a switch under the dash when I see the temperature gauge going over about 90°C.
I also intend to add some shrouds to the fans to concentrate and contain the airflow onto the cylinders.

Can you advise please, Is the sandwich plate for the sender units available to buy or is it homemade?

I got the sandwich plate and the gauge from Merlin Motorsport
(www.merlinmotorsport.co.uk) at Castle Coombe.
The sandwich plate is known as a "Billet" sandwich plate, probably because it is machined from a solid piece of Aluminium.
You will also need an extension piece with a 3/4 x 16 UNF thread that screws onto the existing oil filter mounting thread. This holds the sandwich plate in place and also provides a new thread for the oil filter to screw onto.
The gauge is SPA Part No. DG209

The simpler [and substantially cheaper] way to mount an oil temperature guage is to buy a fish tank temeperature guage with wire and sender bulb from Maplins and zip tie the sender bulb to the outside of the oil tank, and lead the wire through the car, mounting the guage itself on the dashboard wherever you want it. The cost is less than £10, it is easy to do and you do not have to drill holes.

The downside is that you only get an approximation of the oil temperature, and if it goes over 60degrees the guage cannot cope, but then it is getting quite hot, and when drivng the temperature remained around 45 = 55 degrees.

It certainly gave me enough information to know what temeprature my oil was.

Very neat fans...far better IMO than the Factory Fan which I think looks very clumsy. :santa2:

The oil monitoring is a very nice solution,
while the ventilation system does not match my taste at all.
Sorry, don't want to criticise, but for me it does not fit the car style.
