Correct, we used the BL main puller on the shop floor and at the training school, all BL service tools of that era started 18G and The one you need is 18G304 with the hub flange adapter legs that screw on to the wheel studs. Wind up to max pressure and a sharp crack with a hammer and drift and if your lucky they pop. If not your into more work but nothing was mentioned about that in the original post.

Actually stiring the grey matter reminds me it's all Austin/Morris tools that VL Churchill (BL Tools supplier) stamped 18G, I think Triumph used a numeric code?

I'm surprised that a 2005 car needs rear bearings. I can't recall ever having to change a rear bearing through wear.

If you use puller leg direct onto the wheel studs on the Salisbury Morgan axle you have a good chance of breaking the stud.

The stud is 14mm 1.5 thread but it screws into 7/16 BSF in the drive flange.

(The same holes for the cheese head screws that hold the drums on the wire hubs.)

This is one of Morgan's more egregious engineering bodges, as there are about 6 or 7 threads holing the wheel stud into the hub the answer they have come up with is to weld the back of the thread!

Best to use a hook three leg puller.

Last one I need changed was a 1992 Subaru Justy basically Polo sized car in 1997 and the rear wheel bearing was noisey.

I was busy and the garage said their puller was at its limit and some heat and a big hit with a hammer was required to move the bearing.

Tried and failed, so invested in one of these from Mulfab tools very handy

A new fuel tank and steering joint were fitted. The labour cost was itemised for the replacement of each wheel bearing, the fuel tank and the steering joint. No other work was requested or carried out.


Nothing would surprise me when it comes to things going wrong with a Morgan.

Removing the bearings must have been a struggle judging by the state of one of them. Unfortunately, I don't have the other.







It'll be some time before I get over the amount of the bill.

On mine a hard blow with a hammer on the central bolt of the puller did the trick on one side, on the other side it didn't move. I left the puller on under full tension and left it like that. When I came into the garage the other morning the puller and the drum lay on the floor.

That's a useful thing to know......

I have only had ever to change one wheel bearing on my 1985 Audi Coupe after hitting a monumental pothole in Austria at high speed. I needed a new wheel as well!!
