A pal of mine wants to ride ( Motorcycle) the "Great ocean Road" he will be starting from Cowes on Phillip island and riding west and wants to finish at Warrnambool. Can you recommend some places to stop on his trip (Places of interest and accommodation)it would be appreciated. would like to do that myself but what are the ozzies like about speed traps. It would be horrendous to drive such a nice road and not to be able to "give it some".

Peter many thanks for the info which I have duly passed on my friend. I only wish I was riding it with him ..... maybe one day eh!!
I guess I can't complain as this summer we intend riding the Verdon gorge then route Napoleon .... then and at last the Stelvio pass after several attempts because of snow and bad weather stopping us previously.

Did this drive a few months ago (in an my uncle's Alfa 159).
Stayed in Apollo Bay, then spent the next day in the Otways (awesome), then the next day continued to Port Fairy and did the twelve Apostles. On the way back went up through the Grampians. Beautiful.
I can probably find the names of the actual places we stayed if you want. We LOVED "The Victoria Apartments" in Port Fairy, stayed there for only one night though. I really liked Port Fairy. Liked getting out and hiking in the Grampians and Otway the most. During Holidays the road I'm sure gets very crowded. Lots of tour buses near the twelve apostles.
In terms of "giving it some" on the road, there were some fun places to drive along the way with nice twisties, but for most of it it was fun enough just looking out of the window. I'll throw some pics up in a minute.
I'm also a huge "nature" guy and was totally nerding out about all the parrots and tree-ferns. Not to mention all the badass cars they never imported to the states.

We have what is known as "Hoon Laws" in Australia, if you are caught going a certain percentage over the speed limit (I think 50% so 180 in a 110 zone), they will impound the vehicle for 28 days as a first offence. It will cost a packet to get it out as well as the fine and loss of licence. Tourist roads will be pretty heavily patrolled and Victoria and NSW are very heavy with their road patrols. I know we are all hoons at heart, but "speed Kills" and sometimes its not the speeder.

In the UK it is 30mph over the limit that gets you in deep, deep trouble and can result in doing time.
Certainly doing more than 100 mph on a motorway will result in a court hearing, not a fixed penalty ticket and a criminal record.

Yes but not a real criminal record. Assuming no accident, I cant think of anybody equating the criminal record of doing 101mph with that of burglary.
I would have thought that any speeding offence is a criminal one and gives a record , even the 31 in a 30 limit that a pal got done for.
