On a visit to the factory recently I was told that there will be waterproof leather available for the M3W at about £500 or so. Sounds a good idea but yet another expense.

I would be interested in hearing of any tips on leather care and products available to protect against mould when stored in a garage or out on the road when driving in the rain.

The leather the factory uses is water resistant. I've known cars that have been thoroughly soaked and subsequently wiped down and there have been no problems with leather damage. You can keep the leather clean and supple with a number of proprietary leather cleaners.
I wouldn't worry too much about it.

To echo Jay's comments, keeping leather waterproof and supple isn't hard, but leather needs regular care and attention.

Leather is skin, and like all skin it is essential to keep it clean and moisturise regularly. Monthly would be good in the summer, less in winter. Go by the feel, it should feel "mildly moist"! If SWIMBO rides a horse ask her...involve her!

Don't buy the expensive stuff supplied by car polish companies, go to your local equine supplier and by leather cleaner intended for saddles, bridles and other tack.

I moisturise it 4 times per year and put leather "food"on once per year.

Horse tack shops sell the real deal.

The seats are still lovely, but the arm supports are showing significant distress because of contact with my highly grippy motorcycle clothing. I dont care because they can be replaced one day.

I'd have a look at the Andrew Muirhead website about the care of automotive leather. In their words you only need to clean to prevent build up of abrasive dirt which would otherwise damage the protective finish. They say there is no need to feed the leather.
It's obviously different if you have an older car where the leather may be analine or just badly worn.
