It's taken 18 months to get around to making a spare wheel protector for Mr Bumble. But cold winter days offer a good opportunity to get on with jobs like this.
The first job was to dig out some stainless steel. The dimensions are shown. I had to shave a few mm from each long edge while fitting - no more than 4mm each side. The U bolts are 42mm.
This time I drilled through the U bolts instead of using C brackets inside. This is a much neater solution. Cutting oil makes the job much easier when drilling stainless steel.
This is a test fit over the baseplate.
Here's the finished cover. Lined inside with 4mm neoprene, and edged with U channel, mitred on the corners and fixed with superglue. I expected it to be shiny but when I stripped off the protective cover - it was satin finish!
Here's the baseplate with pilot holes drilled. This offcut came from Newark Autojumble, and was 70p for a length three times as long as this. The remainder is in one of the earlier photos.
Here's the completed baseplate. Slotted so that it can be fitted without removing the T bar. The holes are very slightly off position, but not enough to matter.
I need a bench drill!
Test fit and all is well.
And that's another job done.
Note that this slightly protrudes into the space where the sidescreen bag fits. On the Roadster, due to the deeper spacing it doesn't intrude at all. Here though, it may be a tight fit to get the sidescreens in. We'll see.
