The dreaded fuel guage caught me out for the first time this evening.
Thought I'd go for a quick spin and came to a grinding halt in a little village not too far from home. As luck would have it I was right opposite a secondhand car dealer. The owner was incredibly helpful and found a half full can of fuel. The beast was duly started to the accompaniment of huge amounts of blue smoke bangs and horrible running. The owner was mortified and realised he'd given me his lawnmower fuel. He was so emabarrased he drove me to the nearest petrol station armed with more cans to get some real fuel. Well we added it and after a minute of smokey running its back to normal. Just hoping the fuel injection doesn't mind oily fuel. Seemed to run fine on the five mile run home. Fingers crossed

Did you cut the grass on the way home?

Will not do any harm and its been heavily "diluted"

As a fan and owner of two stroke bikes I became good at mixing many years ago!

Good to hear. Just a little bit of extra lubrication I suppose

Not enough to produce visible smoke, but in common with quite a few owners of vintage engines, I use 200:1 two stroke oil as an upper cylinder and valve stem lubricant. Modern oil control rings are somewhat better than those of the 30s and earlier, hence the idea of adding a bit of oil.

With a modern engine, the catalytic converter(s) would be my worry.

Hi Martyn,
I Presume you mix a drop of CasTrol R to produce the real aroma of the 30s.I still race all the classic bikes on Castrol R but as you say not much gets passed modern oil control rings.

Martyn is correct, the oil won't do any damage to any of the injection parts, (it might even benefit the pump by lubricating it) however oil in the exhaust can damage the catalyst.

I would very much doubt that you have done any damage after 5 minutes BUT you should take it out for a high rev run as soon as possible. You want to light up those cats and get them to operating temperature as quickly as possible, and then to burn off any oil residues from the surfaces by running hard and hot for some time. I would err on the side of running it too long and too hot.

Let us know how it goes.

Some good advice but I hate to say the most sensitive component has been missed, if you have a pre cat Lambda sensor it's very sensitive to oil, post cats are normally fine as the cat will burn off most of the oil and the amount it won't burn until it's hot will be trapped. I have seen quite a few cases of turbo seal failure where the oil went through the engine and the driver kept on driving ignoring the smoke to get off motorways etc. and the pre cat sensor normally gets stuffed. Nothing you can do about it, they/it (you don't mention the model or year?) will be fine or will need replacing. If the MIL (check engine) light does not come on when you take it for a blast buy a lottery ticket as its your lucky week.

Matty - what percentage was the fuel guage reading when the motor died?

I put a dash of Castrol R into my lawn mower so I get the full VSCC ambiance whilst cutting the grass.

Sad I know!
