In a forthcoming wedding speech I want to make an oblique reference to how many man-hours it takes to build a traditional Morgan. Anyone got any idea? Come to think of it, someone will probably give me the answer precisely

In 2008 my 4 seater was built in 19 working days, when I asked about this (I nearly missed the chance to visit and photograph it in build) Mark Leddington said it was the second car to be started after the Christmas break and as such the first few are always faster as the weeks before Christmas are used to sort the backlog and clutter so the first cars after Christmas fly through....given all the problems with the car I can believe that sadly!

With Colin on this one as my car was started on the Friday before the summer break so had a few hours of build before the factory closed for a week. When they got back I think they must have forgotten what went where as there were numerous problems. Start to delivery was 8 weeks and then another 8 weeks post delivery until it was finished, including a return to the factory and weeks at the dealer. Love the car now and it is everything I expected it to be but you may wish to define what 'building a Morgan' means. Is it when Morgan first release it or is it when the initial problems have been sorted out.

My Plus 4 was started the week before Christmas and delivered last week. As for man hours though it depends how long it was waiting to go from one stage to another. Maybe Jay (or anyone else in the know) can tell us whether it is a seamless process.

Sadly I don't have an answer to the precise number of man hours and it's not something I've managed to ascertain. 15 days is typical of the build process from start to finish but that can vary at times depending on volumes going through.

Steve,
Building an Aero based Morgan takes rather longer!
I was told, again by Mark L, that putting the engine/transmission, fuel system suspension and electronics/wiring in the tub takes 37 man hours, compared with 7.5 for a trad.
The real answer to the question, as others have said, is "the job is never finished". A good analogy for a marriage: getting the couple to the point when people think the job is done is easy, but the job is never really finished and needs enduring care and maintenance. Quite an appropriate question to answer on St Valentines Day!

Excellent, Peter - thanks a lot! I will use that. Thanks to everyone else for their input. Good material; I'll have 'em rolling in the aisles yet . The parallel to be drawn is that of a the time taken to hand-build a Morgan, with the accompanying photographic record, and the time taken to "build" a four-tier, Art Deco inspired wedding cake, with a photo record of the construction. The Lady of the House is i/c and I am "the boy". Today I continue cutting out of paper-thin icing a total of 400 triangles...
