I rather suspect that the short fuel sender is a deliberate 'feature' designed in from the start, so that the remaining fuel is treated as a reserve tank. If this is the case, sadly, they didn't think it through thoroughly enough.

.......so, in order to stave off the gauge reading zero for as long as possible, you fill to the brim when refilling. BUT I'm told there is a danger of damaging the charcoal vapour filter if you overdo the filling. Is this a real likelihood?

While I don't know for sure if the filter can be damaged in this way or what effect that damage might have, you can certainly get a misfire if you over fill the tank. This usually resolves itself very quickly but I've found that pulling over and opening the tank sorts it out.

I can confirm that. First time it happened to me was after I filled up the tank in Kilkenny (Ireland). After leaving the gas station the engine started to misbehave and I thought I was doomed ... pulled over, opened the cap, closed it, re-started ... all in order! Learned my lesson

The Plus 8 has a strange design feature, a realistically accurate fuel tank sender, but no low level fuel warning light even though the gauge has a provision for a warning light, as does the water temperature gauge.

As well as fuel and water temperature gauges there is a digital display, showing fuel in % and temperature in degrees centigrade.

When the digital read out is down to 0% the tank has 5L left of the 55L, and I can then add 50L.

But just to remind me it is a Morgan, to fill the tank takes about 5 min: the last 10L has to be dribbled in at snails pace...
