Hello, this week I went to a Mustang garage in the area to solve the issue with my missleading speedo. The bad news is, they can only read some but not correct parameters from the ECU, since Morgan did something special here. To get the true speed for the correction, they had to put the car on their rolling road . So I asked them to fix it properly to be able to do a performance test just out of curiosity. And that's the good news: My roadster, which is completely standard except the sport exhaust, delivers: 308,5 DIN-hp at 6590rpm at the clutch and a torque of 375 Nm at 4100 rpm. Sufficient, isn't it? A USA tuning company told me that the engine supplied to Morgan would be a crate engine and Ford lock the ecu on crate supplied engines so they couldn't help on a remap.

That ties in with the story about the delay in getting the 3.7 engine into cars as the original batch of production engines had been supplied with an ECU fro an automatic box and they would not start because there was a manual box on the car did not talk to the ECU.
Morgan had to wait for the manual box engine ECU it was thought at the time.
On the other hand you would think that Morgan would indeed need to be able to do some tweeking on the ECu as their must be some local changes they need to make from time to time and in different markets.

I am surprised Morgan don't use an off the shelf programmable ECU to suit instead of being hand tied to the Engine manf' ECU?

Before the 3.7 Roadster kicked off I was in discussion at the factory - ( I was seriously considering a 3.7). There were a number of things going on at the time. If you recall, Roadster production had ceased, pending the new engine and there were a few weeks when no Roadsters were being built. I was informed that there were some difficulties in negotiating the engine supply, and at that time the cost per unit was thought to be too high. It's also the case that the instruments used are tied into the ECU, so there were no other options for those instruments which split opinion.
Reading between the lines, it may have been a take it or leave it deal. When you have a company the size of Ford with the huge resources devoted to designing a capable ECU, it's understandable that it would take a high level of knowledge and ability to be able to enter that ECU and 'improve' it. Or come up with a replacement for that matter.

So why in the name of the "Gods of Malvern" didn't they offer the cars with an Auto box???
I'd have bought one!

I am surprised Morgan don't use an off the shelf programmable ECU to suit instead of being hand tied to the Engine manf' ECU? I'm no expert, but maybe retaining the OM spec ECU avoids the need to re-homologate or re-do the emissions certification?

We don't need auto-boxes. We have torque... All I want is a propper speedo with all the speedtraps around. Thanks for your input guys, that would explain why they couldnt get access.
