I think it may be a regional thing. Baseball caps are the norm here is the US. Flat caps are a bit difficult to find.

On the subject of hats
There is a very good photo of HFC Morgan driving a 3 wheeler sporting a rather fine 'bowler' or 'Coke' (pronounced cook) hat in the Morgan Museum
Interestingly, long before the British businessmen adopted the bowler in the city, the 'Bowler' or 'Derby' as it was called in The States, was the fashionable and essential headwear of the American West.
Its a pity that the baseball cap has become so ubiquitous
Just don't wear it backwards.....please.....for real, innit.....me in da hood...whatever that means...
With no sun visors on the car I keep a baseball cap with a large peak in the car which I use on sunny days more as a 'wearable sun visor' than a hat (no hair to get blown I'm afraid). Works well (so far!).
Baseball cap for summer and mild days in winter. It's a Morgan one now faded but does the biz. Never blown off but has a clip for attaching to my collar " just in case". I also have a white flat cap, Morgan bobble hat for Morvan charity North Cape run, furry trapper hat from Estonia( fake fur). Haven't tried a knotted handkerchief yet though...

Don't know why that should be the case. My flat caps stay on at 150 kph (93 mph). Up to 130 kph or more even my leather Australian hat stays in place. Even though I am 6 ft tall it is all in my legs and sitting I probably seem about 4 inches shorter so it probably has something to do with the level of the head in the car.
What you are trying to say Peter, is that you manage to hold your hat on with your knees
I do use a baseball cap but more a sailing style one as they seem to stay on better. For LMC and the Shelsley vintage events, I wanted something a bit more period. Flat caps never really stay on my head until I found a leather baker boy style by Stetson and a linen version. They seem to do the biz!

I will admit to a flat cap, my beloved Harris Tweed Bakers Boy style bought in Scotland last year, I won't admit to the sailing cap (can't bring myself to admit it's exactly the same as a baseball cap) I bought to keep the sun out of my eyes, as a glasses wearer it stops the double reflections, it's fading nicely and looking well worn in now ;-). Also I think you have seen me in the cap Jay so better be honest ;-).
HI Been out for drive in my 4/4/4 seater,stopped at small market town Barnard castle and bought myself a smart flat cap to replace my baseball cap,(as friends said it was not fitting the image of a morgan owner)Next stop lunch in small cafe offered and served PENSION SPECIAL Result tweed hat nearly paid for.ps only a young looking 59 with baseball cap.
Or this....not the Stetson Bakerboy but another leather cap from Australia (eureka stockade) which fits really well and has a nice worn patina...bit like me really!
