I love leather bags, but I can't help feeling it's just not the right material for a rack-mounted case, they would just end up stained and sodden. And if you cover them up with a waterproof cover, there's not much point having them. Not to mention that with a quick flick of a Stanley knife, a ne'er-do-well would be away with any valuables before you could say "But I locked it to the rack!"
A soft holdall type bag to go behind the seats, though, is a seriously tempting proposition...

I bought a very cheap (but nice looking) copy of the Morgan case on ebay (from a private seller) and used a silicone waterproofer on it. I then fitted a gasket to the lid using self adhesive 10mm neoprene. The contents are kept in a waterproof bag (just in case).
It remained watertight during a very heavy downpour from western Scotland (aquaplaning volume) to the lake district and i would happily trust the case to remain dry inside again. Rain does darken the leather, but it does return to its original colour when dry,
I cannot see the point in having a good looking case then putting it in a waterproof bag. I would not ever leave the car unattended though even with a wired padlock.

If anyone has the Morgan luggage straps how wide/long are they? I was about to order them then spotted these: http://www.barefootleather.co.uk/leather...addletan50xwideI can live without the wings on the buckles for half the price. Edit, heaven knows what this is doing on movie/video thread!

The width is fine - but the ones we just had made are 69" long - just right for a medium size suitcase on the rack.
I see that Barefoot make to order so they could maybe make them longer?
Ours were £60 for the pair - made by our local saddler with stainless buckles - they do look fantastic!!

Thanks for that, I'll contact Barefoot, I'm sure they will make whatever length I want.

Stuart
if you fancy a nice drive out to Ceder farm in Mawdsley, Peter who does the leather craft in the first shop to the left made my red leather suitcase straps bespoke - he reused the Morgan buckles that came with the Morgan leather case straps but he has plenty of his own
It took about 2 weeks and he also put a red leather cross strap on my Morgan luggage strap which was a bit shorter that the original so it fitted perfectly in my luggage rack
It all came to about £90
you never know, he might have some maroon and ivory leather pieces to make a strap up

Thanks for the info Stewart, I fancied the online ones but the idea of maroon and ivory ones is interesting. Mrs Scratched has pointed out that I already have some on my existing Morgan "style" case but they are not great quality and the last thing I want is to see the new case disappearing in my rear view mirror!

How do you attach a Peli case to the rack? Just with straps or can it be fixed on somehow?

I strap mine on - mixture of nylon or leather and a few bungees...
