Hi, I have a bit of an itch for something rather more 'period' but not exotic (code for affordable!) Quite fancy an MGA TA.. Anyone have experience of these..views? Thanks.

When I had a Midget (1968 version) I went on many Regency runs London to Brighton.
The 40 & 50 MGs aren't that fast, look great but need lots of TLC.
Try the owners club to see if it is for you. I always fancied a TC or an MGA but settled for a Morgan as they have up to date go & stop bits & generally are reliable

I had a 1937 MG NA and a friend had a 40's TC but that was nearly 50 years ago and they were 30 years old then ! But as I remember quite reliable. Had a new 1098 cc 1966 Midget followed by a 1968 1275 cc with the latest folding hood, they were great little cars

For awhile in the 90's a Malaysian company made an MG TC 2000. They had one on display at KLIA and it looked very nice with modern elctrics etc and I think a Mazda engine.

Why a TA Steve? Not many have the original engine because it was weak and suffered cracked blocks. I've only had a ride in one TB - with a Tickford body - DHC. It looked fantastic, but the experience was not one I could live with. It was slow, and very flexible, and very rattly. In other words, too much of a liability on modern roads.
I drove a TD once, which in theory should have been much better with IFS etc, but that was also pretty dire.
Whereas a well sorted MGA is a superb car to ride in.
PS - just noticed the TC amendment - the above still applies!

I had an MGA 1600 mk2 with an 1800cc 3 bearing MGB engine in it. Didn't know about the none standard engine when I bought it but kept it for 5 years and looking back, it was brilliant. It was followed by a Healey 3000 (BJ8) and I have to say that I liked the MGA better. That said I am now on my third Morgan and have no tent ion of changing. Bob.

Had a MGA for 12 years used it for hillclimbs, sprints, rallying stage and road, autocrossed for many years. Drove it to near destruction. They don't come much tougher. could have parked next to the top gear Toyota when I sold it for spares.
.+8 Now gone for a 1800 4/4. Duratec in bright yellow.

Owned several lovely MGs including PB, TC, TF and F1 Magna, Each had its shortcomings and advantages, all had a fold flat windscreen. The PB had abysmal brakes (cable operated), the TC was nice and I fitted an OD tow bar to haul a sailing dinghy around, the TF was the least loved by me. The F1 was creme-de-la-creme, six cylinder, so flexible and superbly engineered. The crash gear box needed a little getting used to. It is still roadworthy and being driven about Devon having given 83 years of service.

Graham, how do you think a TC would compare with a 4/4 ?
