Good idea, or not?

Last summer I participated in an MSCC regional centre run to Colditz in eastern Germany. En route we stopped for a night at the Moehne Dam. So when I saw this item for sale it was a “must-have”. The un-verified story goes that it came off the dashboard of a 1937 MG TA used be an RAF officer to tour North Rhine-Westphalia immediately post-war. It is 2” in diameter and my intention was to affix it to the dashboard of Baby Blue. But I’ve paused in that intent because it occurs to me that when the day comes to sell the car, as it surely will, will the presence of the medallion add or detract to the appeal? Will it represent an attractive curiosity that says a little something about the travel history of my car, or will it put off a potential buyer who has no affinity or interest in Moehnesee – and, worse, taking it off will reveal two screw holes in the dashboard? What do you think?

A tricky one I agree, if you intend to keep Baby Blue a few years then as you say if you fix with screws it will leave holes. One option might be to use the doudle sided tape for number plate fixing. This is very sticky and as long as you clean the badge back and dash free of grease should remain firm. When you want to remove you will need to slide a blade behind it and cut through the foam of the tape, then clean of the dash. Clean off the glue with eucalyptus oil, it breaks the glue down.

I agree, it's not a particularly easy decision to make. I agree with Adrian that a non-permanent solution is probably best, but then it's a strange world where we save up for years in order to buy ourselves the car we have always wanted, and yet once we own it we do our best to keep it nice for the next owner smile

It's your car, mate. Do what you want to it.

+ 2 for the double sided foam tape.
I would also cut down 2 Stainless machine cap head screws, to fit as dummies in your fixing points to make it look 'Fixed to the dash as it should be'.

kind regards

And a tip for removing it if you ever want to......warm it slightly with a hairdryer...or leave it parked out on a hot summers day, and use dental floss to work behind the badge. It won't damage the dash surface.

Interesting badge. I was at the dam a couple of years ago on a motorcycle "dambusters" tour of the dams...wished I'd seen the badge!

That’s it then – double sided tape. I was considering this, together with dummy screw heads and your replies have convinced me; thanks everyone. But double sided foam tape? Can you point me towards the brand? I can’t go with Blutack – got to keep the medallion as safe as possible from souvenir hunters when parked.

Halfords sell double sided trim tape...it's got a very thin foam backing.

Number plate adhesive strips would work. They are designed so number plates can't be stolen easily but can be removed with a length of fishing line. Also available at Halfords.
