Wow! Good job, Peter!

That was my line of thinking too, in that if you can break the resonance with a barrier of some sort it would help. The noise appears to be loudest on the overrun & whilst I appreciate that whilst it's only one of a multitude of noises, and that it doesn't cure the problem, it should at least alleviate some of the symptoms.

Loving your colour choices, too.

Thanks for the pic

Regarding the temperature , ive just returned from a shortish trip , about 7 miles ,most on a dual carriageway and its warm but not hot . i can hold my hand on it .

But , mine is a quiet one , maybe the loud ones get hotter !

8 miles, didn't go under the car, too wet, but using an Infra Red thermometer there was no real difference between the diff and any where elae in the area, about 4c.

FWIW the Merc dif has to deal with 238 bh and 399 ft lbs torque. Yes, it is a diesel. But a bit more than the M3W. I don't accept that a properly designed, constructed and assembled bevel box should generate any significant heat.

A noisy box is wasting energy, noise is energy. No surprise that noisy boxes also get hot. A crude simple bevel box needs lubricating with an EP oil, not grease. The oil helps to take heat away from the teeth meshing. But a modern box shouldn't need to remove much heat and a thicker oil would be better.

I'd love to see inside one of these boxes, I'd also love to see the specifications for set up, getting the teeth to mesh correctly requires precise manufacture and careful assembly.

Mine lasted 2,700 miles before the screaming drove me mad.
Ear-plugs over 60mph were compulsory!
New bevel box fitted and now very little screaming but ghastly rattling at steady state light throttle cruising - Doh! Come back the screaming - this is more annoying.

My MTW is now almost two years young and I am having the third bevel box installed. Although my second one sounded very good (I was so happy to have a quiet one at last), the last inspection of the car showed that oil was leaking out of the box - so here we go again. Unfortunately, the warranty will end in three weeks...

i share your pain, first BB was perfect and silent until it leaked. Replacement does not leak but noise covers the engine when the oil gets hot.
