Hi Peter.
Be aware that modern(and not so modern) aircrafts use 28V DC, and 115V AC
The battery('s)are 28V from a type that might start a fire.

Ruby now starts like a dream! I worked out why I was having trouble before - the cells were only half full, the acid having leaked down over the bulkhead. I guess it's all the potholes around here...

Ouch how is the bulkhead? Time for some neutralsing solution & a good clean up?

Just a thought is the rectifier over charging & boiling it off? Seems odd for it to just be bounced out.

How would I tell? The voltage meter seems correct on the dashboard.
Bulkhead cleaned & neutralised before fitting the new battery. :-)

Use a dvm across the battery terminals when the engine is running anything higher than 14.5vdc and you have a problem in the alternator.

I've just measured the voltage across the battery terminals:
Idle: 14.2V
5000 rpm: 14.2V
I've also noted that the dashboard meter reads significantly low! 13.8V (estimated as the graduations are not precise.
I don't think that's too high. The spec sheet says the following:
Alternator: 13.3 to 15.0 volts; no amperage limit
Battery Charger: 13.8 to 15.0 volts; 10 amps maximum; 6-12 hours approximate
Float Charge: 13.2 to 13.8 volts; 1 amp maximum current (indefinite time at lower voltages)
Rapid Recharge: (Constant voltage charger) Maximum voltage 15.6 volts. No current limit as long as battery temperature remains below 50°C (125°F). Charge until current drops below 1 amp.
The previous battery was very "discount"!
