I'm going to put myself on a limb here and hope for the best. As this is part of the Internet, the best will probably not occur.
I have had zero problems with my so-called cush-block installed in my October 2012 build. Does it make noise? Oh yes! Whenever I lug the engine. Always. Damn thing makes a racket when I'm idling with the clutch in!
After really listening to the motor and bikers who love V-twins it became apparent to me that I was doing it wrong and had to adjust my ways.
To whit:
Never lug the engine. Doing anything with a load under 2700rpm is a sin and consigns you to a particular circle of Hell.
Keep the revs up. Smooth out the impulses from that crazy ridiculous motor by keeping the revs above 3 grand. Around 3700rpm is a real sweet spot.
I am saying these rules not to point out sins and failures of fellow drivers but as good house keeping.
The biggest problem with the motor and the transmission (which is what the cush-block is trying to save!) is that there are serious gaps in the power curve of the motor versus the tranny's range. The transmission came out of a Mazda Miata, hooked up to a motor that could go from 1000 rpm to about 7000rpm. Our cobbed together monster has an effective range of 3000 to 5000 rpm.
There are very large gaps. So technique comes into play. Another cush-blocking device is not the ultimate answer. Either a different tranny with more gearing ratios to play with or an extremely modified driving technique.
I've chosen the latter. Yes, I've been eating sprockets, but so what? Not a lot to do with the cush-block. Mostly I can thank Morgan Motors for that glitch.
Driving this damn thing has become an art form. Isn't this what we want? Isn't this why we do this?
What's your mileage? Who cares. Is it practical? See #1. What happens when it rains? You get wet.
