AQM - a lot of what you say has a lot of good sense, but sometimes it's best to try to read the positives rather than the negatives. I find emails, forums and texts are all places where quick-fire responses can do more harm than good, and having read the lot of this with increasing horror I really don't believe for one moment that anyone at any time meant to have a go at your unfortunate loss!
We're bound together by much more 'in common' than not. Deep breath, shake hands, move on. And Jack's apology had true style and hopefully will allow calm to return (even if he had nothing to apologise for).
