Similar happened to me last weekend on MTWC Night Trial. Ran full beam most of the route and intercom and 12 volt electric blanket. When we stopped at the last control point and switched off the engine it took a push to get us started again. Ran to finish on dipped beam (or side lights where we could) and got some charge back into the battery. Volt meter read 12.3 on dipped beam. Morning after with no lights on it was reading around 14.5 volts and the battery charged ok.

Isn't the M3W be running twice the number of headlights, never mind accessories, than a motorcycle, which maybe is what the alternator is designed to normally power?

Yes I have gone through an alternator.
Perhaps it has packed in. Which is an engine ojt job.

heated seats only use a small amount of power. Typically less than 50w. Consequently they are a necessity with electric vehicles.
The ignition, fuel pump and lights are much more hungry. Maybe the seats push it over the edge.

Should have had one in my mates tweaked 1982 +8 . It was a Feb day in the mid 1990s he took me for a spin and I just had a shirt on . On the way back to his home he said " I can take that corner at 100mph" it was his wide practise corner. I replied you " *?!)*%$* idiot its to tight " . Round we went I could feel through my arse the tyres fighting for grip . He had no fear and thats the 1st time I have said the Lords pray in a mog passenger seat at 100+ mph. Think he was getting his own back for the times and pranks I pulled on him . Thats what moggin is all about two crazy buggers enjoying themselves one with soiled jeans. crazy3 drive

Em, thanks. Not heard of them so I shall now go looking. I am a member of TaffMog but have yet to make a Noggin. Clashes with my other role as Sailing Captain for FBYC and recovering from a strained back courtesy of mud moving to make way for a car port for the M3W. I was in Ireland two weeks ago with Mike Chilton and Phyllis. See you soon.

Thanks to everyone for their contributions. The rectifier is fried and it has two earth leads. A meccano and spaghetti job once I get the replacement. Everything on an M3W is exposed but given the nature of electrons and their destructive affinity for water the rectifier seems ill-sited.

Has anyone devised a protective shield for it? Beyond my skills but I know a man who can. Any designs? Any experience? The rectifier's finned top would indicate heat dispersion but a screen in front would still leave it pretty exposed but protected from the direct blast.

Just for the record, after flattening the battery - at least enough so it wouldn't start the car - on MTWC Night Trial, it had a good long run out yesterday in daylight, with several stops and all was fine. Voltmeter was showing the usual 14.3 volts when I looked.

I'm convinced the alternator isn't man enough to run full beam and all the other electrics and still keep the battery topped up.

If it is out of warranty, get a Harley rectifier rather than another CE one, HD p/n 74540-01. A far more reliable unit and a straight swap apart from the long cable terminal end needing replacement.

Problem traced to, yes you've guessed it, the rectifier. It eventually gave up a week after my original post.
