Couldn't agree more. the only reason for knowing mpg is to calculate range to next fill up, given the uncertainty associated with Mog fuel gauges...

For the Plus 8 it is about 260 miles having fun, 320 sitting on motorways at 75 ish.

The gauge on my roadster S1 takes c 200 miles to hit half full then descends like a lead balloon to zero.

I averaged 27.5mpg over the last 12 months and 4445 miles with an SD of 4.4 mpg.

Interesting comments on MPG (or l/km) – it’s one of the parameters I monitor and plot total average MPG – I find a plot of MPG on each fill goes up and down depending upon how/where you have driven during that fill. This did help me identify a problem occurring on a petrol Audi I had – the gradual decrease in average MPG at around point 100 can be seen. Solved the issue (slightly leaking injector seal from memory) and average MPG crept back up and stayed pretty level until sold (at 150,758 miles). You can also see the increase in MPG as the engine loosened up running in – with stability reached after about 25,000 miles.



Doing the same for the Morgan +4 (but only have data for first 1593 miles – average now 38.6 MPG but, as engine loosens up can see average MPG increasing from an initial 34.5 MPG. Reckon it will level out at over 40.

So while I agree driving the Morgan is more entertaining! - I find average MPG a useful parameter to help spot things happening.

Don't plot mine, but do keep a running log for the same reason!

Russell made us laugh when a group visited RPM on our way back from LeJog 5 years ago... People who'd bought the then nearly new 4/4 Sport and claimed 50 mpg upset him - "They aren't driving the car properly, should be less than 25!" (or words to that effect)

Why buy a SPORTS car and strive for high mpg?
If you are that worried about economy then why spend a good sum on a Morgan and go for hypermiling driving style to save a few £ ?
No need to thrash the car but drive it sensibly and enjoy it's performance.
Unless, of course, its bought for it's looks........
And to be garaged, polished,only driven in the dry.......
OK that's my personal attitude covered....I love driving mine.
I may calculate mine sometime this summer......just to give an answer to anyone who asks....

Agreed! - If you have the disposable for the capital outlay, who cares what the mpg is given the tiny mileage that most of us do.

I think it's more of a psychological thing - I can press the button transferring say £40k to buy a car without batting an eyelid, but paying £50 quid in folding at the forecourt, for yet another Plus 8 top up would irritate.

Why do we fanny about with Tesco cards and buying baked beans in multi packs to save a few pence when we spend £££'s on a sports car???

Given that most +8's have a tiny annual mileage I can understand those who say what the heck when it comes to topping the tank up or indeed the frequency. However, there are those who view the opportunity to take the car abroad for a holiday, or even run it as a reasonably regular second car.

Paying through the nose for pathetic fuel economy becomes more important here, and anyone who's journey involves traffic density will laugh out loud at anyone boasting about how much fuel they use. You only queue at the slowest car's rate, after all.

MPG is important, whether it's important to you is subjective.
