Hi, I'm a four-wheeler owner but a friend I'm staying with in Spain showed me this pic of his first car, a late 1930's matchless V-twin three speed Morgan. The number plate is partly obscured but he'd be really interested to discover if anyone recogises the car and is it still around? Thank you Paul

Numberplate is almost certainly UB3649. Pretty sure I'm correct as one can see the right-hand of the U and bottom with the kick up. The only other registration that fits is JB3649 but were it this, I'd have expected the plate mounting to be a bit further to the left.

UB is a Leeds registration, JB is a Reading one.

The fact one see four numerals means there are two letters. No UK plate ever issued in the format three letters and four numerals.

Neither UB, nor JB reg numbers come up on a DVLA search.
Neither does UL 5602.

UB registrations were issued from October 1929 until April 1932
JB registrations were issued from March 1932 until August 1936

Neither really tallies with the description "late 30's" but JB would be nearer.

For the record the UL mark can be more accurately dated as between Jan and March 1929, London's issue rate being considerably greater than both Reading and Leeds.

As Dave says, none of those registrations are now active in either the UK or Ireland.

Hi All,
3649 appears to be a very standard, apart from the hub caps, 1934 model year Super Sports with a water-cooled OHV Matchless MX4 engine.
5602 is a two-speed Aero, 1931/32 powered by a water-cooled OHV JAP engine. The side lights seem to be as fitted to Austin cars in the fifties. Strange screw heads showing on the bonnet, some sort of luggage rack on the tail, horn in an unusual place, dubious front wings and repositioned headlamps. Both cars pretty typical of 'daily use' Morgans back in the fifties and sixties.
Best,
Chris
