Hi Yuri..my aero has the original mechanical power steering pump driven by the crank pulley via an extremly poorly engineered coupling ...are you saying that the retro fit electo/hydraulic replacement modification from the factory is the same mini pump which has caused BMW major problems latley ? ie.. lots mini owners with failed and dangerous steering.....I really do not want to be doing this job again....simong

Suprised the mechanical pump lasted this long, they wear out quickly. Still means your car reallis genuine low mileage. Had this done on my s1, no issues following the work and I did 10k miles in 2 years so doubt you'll have issues....
It is noisy though....

Is the car under warranty? I claimed this as a warranty issue...

Just to clarify for you simon, the pump is run on the s1 via a mechanical propshaft from the driveshaft. This isn't a good design and does basically wear out.

The fix is as you have been told an electrically powered pump. This is I think one from a rover of some kind. I had it done as I mentioned and it was a perfectly good fix and never caused further issues. The dealer cost for the fix was over 1000.
As I mentioned this is a known s1 issue and if the car is under warranty you should pursue a claim if your warranty covers this.

Thanks Mr Tony ...i guess my warranty expired 6 years ago, 12 months after i purchased my car..If i had driven 8000 miles in the first 12 months like most owners ,MMC WOULD HAVE THE PROBLEM ...surely this should have been a recall by MMC on safety grounds alone ?... NOT good for customer relations ...,however i love my car and cannot wait to get her back in good health....MY AERO S1 HAS A DOG TYPE COUPLING BETWEEN CRANK PULLEY AND PUMP WHICH HAS SHATTERED ;I MUST SAY A VERY POOR ENGINEERING EFFORT WHICH WAS DESTINED TO FAIL....I CERTAINLEY DO NOT HAVE A MECHANICAL PROPSHAFT FROM THE DRIVESHAFT AS IN YOUR CASE...? THAT does sound problematic ...

Hi simon, the arrangement you describe is probably the one I had, I'm juist not much of an engineer so the description I gave was me rehashing what the mechanic simplified for me. (Cerial will shoot me for getting it so wrong!)
Sounds like you have the fix lined up though which is the main thing.
