I am having a problem for a couple of years now and its when the engine gets really warm it cuts out when I stop at lights, etc. The engine will restart straight away again but its a real pain. The car had a major service around 500 miles ago and I have tried keeping the fuel tank at least half full to ensure itsnot picking up any crud in the tank. Any ideas?
thanks
T

Just a thought, does the BMW engine have variable timing? It could be a dodgy camshaft sensor causing the ECU not to adjust fuelling correctly when dropping revs or if fly by wire throtle could have the same result if giving false voltages to ECU.

I think it does...both inlet and exhaust cams are adjusted, BMWs "double VANOS"

Probably needs the attention of a BMW specialist rather than a Morgan one for that sort of complicated problem.

Plug in a code reader and see if any faults are logged

This may sound crazy, but I wonder if it's vapour lock? Where does the fuel line run? Would it be worth wrapping the fuel line in tin foil just as an experiment?

Hi Neilda,
I was thinking of vapour issues to begin with - but thought it too "old fashioned" a problem, if you see what I mean! Its booked in now to get sorted!
thanks

It sounds very much like vapour lock - engine stalling when hot - but unlikely somehow on this type of engine. Will be interested to hear what the experts say.

Taffy,
I was just looking up my notes on this problem and a possible cause is the MAF. Not sure if you have already lookded at this but if not the Air flow sensor MAF could be an answer. Owners of the S1 have experienced engine cutting out at traffic lights, going into limp home mode etc when this is faulty. Accessed through the cowl and a standard BMW part, £100 cost was mentioned.
Also Viper mentioned in a post some time ago about Brian Millers "stent" idea fitted to the rubber tube air supply which had collapsed thus causing the MAF to fail.
Let me know if you solve the problem
