After two years BL cars were showing signs. It wouldn't be tolerated now, and was one of may reasons why the BL Empire crumbled like its cars.

Rust was just a fact of life back then, I'm not sure BL was any worse than most in that respect. I seem to remember having to wield the Plastic Padding on just about every car I owned irrespective of make. In the late 60's/ early 70s Vauxhall had a terrible reputation for rusting cars and of course all the Italian marques would dissolve while waiting for delivery.

Indeed. I remember my Father's Mark 3 Cortina rusting almost in front of his eyes. Silly old bugger got fed up and sold it, and bought a Marina of all things, which of course rusted even faster.

I bought a new white mini Mayfair in 1983 when I lived in Jersey, within two weeks the roof looked like it had measles, tiny red spots all over.

The days when you were going out to buy a second hand car and you used to take a magnet with you to check if there really was an metal in those sills. Mind you I did stuff a few copies of the Liverpool Echo and Isopon topped off with some sporty black bitumen on to the sills of my sister's first Mini.

Drove the e- type today , not nice weather but the car was race prepared and had larger tyres and an internal roll bar , so it went very fast , lovely gearbox and obviously heavier steering than modern cars , very enjoyable indeed !

I can remember ferrying a friend to collect his car from a body shop in Dorchester (Dorset) in 1978. In the yard was an unregistered Lancia Beta HPE. We asked the chap what had been wrong with it - expecting the answer to be about a ding getting it off the transporter. His response was that it had been in for rust removal and re-painting. At that point, it had not even been driven here - imagine how the winter salt would have affected it. No wonder we see very few 70's Lancia's around.

Was that at Jaguar Heritage at Fen End? I had a go in their Race prepared Mk2. Good fun.

It was at Heyford park , they have two e-types there , one is a lot more srious than the other ! Nice car indeed , hate to think what it would cost to buy an e type and have it upgraded to this !

Incredibly easy to drive and as you say at over 50 yrs old it must have been quite amazing in the day

So easy to drive that even my Woman bought herself one on the basis that "If you can't beat them, join them"

She's been driving it most days.....and she's normally not one to put up with not having modern creature comforts

Great view down the bonnet....even as a passenger
