Had my first couple of proper Summer runs over the weekend due to an enforced time out ( me, not the three wheeler ). The engine is absolutely filthy, and covered in insects, oil and whatever else the road can throw at it. Understandably it isn't just washing off either.

Before I go at it hammer and tongs, I was wondering what tips, products or plain old do's or don'ts anyone out there is happy to impart before I inadvertently spoil the finish.

Tire air pressure/ oil levels... Walk around to check for loosen bolts, around the interior/exhaust bobbins & an all around bolt check

Hot soapy water should do the trick , i also use detailing spray and a microfibre cloth, the liquid desolves the bugs well and they wipe off.

Take care to soak any bugs on the plastic fly screens very well as these can scratch easily.

Bilt hamber wheel cleaner works wonders on the wheels, turning brake dust purple and easy to wash off with a hose

You could try one of the motorcycle cleaners like "Muckoff" which clears that sort of dirt off motorcycle engines pretty well.

Recommend Muck Off. You can get it from Halfords.

Spray on and leave for say 5/10 mins.

Use a stiff brush to loosen the debris.

Then wash off - you can use a low pressure spray.

Dry off or allow to dry then spray on a " finish" coat of say Bike Spray ( also a Muck Off product).
This will leave a factory fresh finish on all parts and help to protect against rust!
You could also use WD40 or ACF50 in the winter.

My paint finish is different, in that it's a 'matte' finish, and so cannot be polished. I've invested in some specialist paint protection products from a guy I know that valet's bikes for a living in Northampton

Other than that, it's as everyone's described on here already. Just keep the interior clean or you'll curse when you get marks on your clobber..

I use muckoff and autoglym insect remover on my 4/4 and they both do a good job.
I swill down with clean water, spray on the magic stuff and a few minutes later hose off.
The insects may need a gentle wipe with a wash mitt or sponge, but having been sprayed they are much easier to remove than with just soapy water.
I'm especially impressed with muckoff on wire wheels

I always give a special care to the plexi Windshields as the material is cheapich the uv from the sunlight will alter it, resultin in yellowing and cracs. I use a polish named Plastol which is uv resistend and makes insects removing very easy. I used it already for long times on Motorcycle Windshields and laquered parts with a good result.

The ACF 50 is interesting, a biker friend uses it, but says it leaves a sticky residue. Those of you using it, do you "spray it on all over" ? I should have said ex-biker friend, otherwise I could just have looked at his and seen how it looked and where/what he applied it to. He now regrets selling, particularly after a spin in the 3W.
