Just for the record, here is an early cap (from June 2012) with the O-ring type seal. No problems with this design as far as I know - I wonder why they changed it?

Ive had both the 2012 and the new type oil tank. The new one is much easier to check the oil level as it has two planes in the tank to look at rather than a dipstick which is hard to use if the oil has been sloshing around.
Changing the rubber material is the point yes. The problem is that viton is the rubber best suited to resisting the dissolving effects of pressure heat and oil. The rubber needs to withstand over 150 deg c. Looking at data tables this rules out nitrile et al.
Viton is the correct spec but i find viton is quite brittle to work with, breaking up into tiny little chunks when you cut it. The same happens when the cap closes on the tube and cuts it. hence why I believe the interface surface areas need to be increased.
Its actually quite a complex problem...

Its actually quite a complex problem... +1 the top surface of the filler neck doesn't have a nice broad flat surface to give a decent seal and as Charles says is inclined to cut whatever gasket material you put against it. I still think that short of welding on a better neck, GLLOQ's aluminium plug with an o-ring seal is the best arrangement.

To be on the safe side I have got rid of the washer and use Loctite 55 on the threads.
Doesn't leak and is easy to remove.

Sorry brittle is probably the wrong word. Perhaps crumbly... It just doesn't cut cleanly. And when it doesnt cut cleanly with the knife I wonder what happens in the tank. Ill investigate the other materials.

What's wrong with a traditional cork gasket?
