At least if my M3W fails I can hang it on the wall as a conversation piece. The DB7 Volante I owned many years ago spent more time in the workshop than it did on the road. The worst car purchase I have ever made. On the other hand, in 2 days I went from test driving a Ferrari California to ordering a Morgan 3 Wheeler. I'm not sure how that sits with the program but like other things in my life I'll never look across the fence at shiney baubles again

"at some other shiney bauble"
Indeed, you can almost make the words ASTON MARTIN using letters in this apt description of (modern) Astons... If we're talking anagrams... Shiney bauble = A senile hubby ...hope I'm not starting something...

The thing about losing the 20% VAT as soon as you buy the car is flawed and just a trick of the trade used by dealers to pay less for part exchanges. A car is worth what someone will pay, and nearly new and short-supply cars are and always have been priced near or sometimes above the original retail price including VAT (and Car Tax).
I personally expect M3W values to harden slightly as the new car sales decline and faults are fixed on earlier cars, but they will be around £10K below that of a new car because of the short lead times these days and the "I can choose the exact spec myself" premium.
For the trad Morgans there is a market perception that there are still long waiting lists and great value retention has been long established but I bet if you try to trade in a nearly new car you are offered a lot less than once might have been the case, again because a new car is available at quite short notice.

The thing about losing the 20% VAT as soon as you buy the car is flawed and just a trick of the trade used by dealers to pay less for part exchanges. A car is worth what someone will pay, Precisely, which is why dealers pay less for cars. The seller always has a choice: do they accept the lower price offered by the dealer, or do they opt to sell the car privately for more? Many people prefer to trade in their old car when they buy a new one, because it's easier, less risky, better for their cashflow, they might not have room for the additional car while they wait for the old one to sell, and many other reasons. When a buyer looks to purchase a nearly new car at a price that is above the original pre-VAT price, they are making choice. They don't have to buy at that price, they don't have to give the profit to the dealer if they don't wish to. To suggest that the lower price offered to trade-ins by the dealer is a 'trick of the trade' is a bit unfair considering the service they are providing, I think.

Not exactly a trick of the trade, but given that a dealer buys the car direct from the factory at something like £2000 less than the pre VAT price, why should he buy in a nearly new secondhand car for more than this?
But I do agree that the "it loses 20% as soon as it is registered and turns a wheel" argument isn't as straight forward as it may at first seem. If the car cannot be ordered in a reasonable time, as was the case for trads. all those years ago, then the dealer would most certainly pay more than the cost price, knowing he could still make his profit, VAT or not. It all depends on the availability of the product in the end, and some Morgans are just too available. Although I speak as an owner, the business would undoubtedly see things differently, as they want to sell new cars, not maintain the values of secondhand ones.

And I thought with VAT paid second-hand cars, the dealer in second-hand cars, pays VAT on the difference, not the sale price.
IE, buys a car for £20000, sells for £25000, VAT is due on £5000, not £25000.
