It is about 100 days since PeterJ was voted in as Vice Chair of MSCC.
A good number of us on here supported his application.
As one of those, who is giving membership of MSCC another year, I would be interested to know other than a few jollies what plans Peter has for making improvements to the club and for membership,and his impressions from the 'inside'.
So, what has happened in the last 100 days?
A serious question needs a serious answer, so nothing about fish here.....
From the "inside" it seems to me that Miscellany is getting better and better with every edition. Charles is getting a lot of support and he listens. His new colleague is very experienced and will support Charles positively.
There will be a new website in 2016 (at last).
The relationship between the Club and the Company is much, much better than ever before, this started with Michele Bailey and is continuing with Peter Chapman.
The relationship with the Travel Club Contractor is generating more money for the Club than anyone expected. More people are travelling. We are looking at ways to get them further involved. Remember, the club gets a share of the booking fee from every person!
MOG 16 will be open for bookings at the end of August and I’m part of the group working on MOG 17: it is very likely to be based at the National Motor Museum, Beaulieu, but this is to be confirmed.
Yes, I am doing my best to evolve the Club in the direction I, based on what I hear from many members, think it needs to go. But as Vice Chair, and for that matter Chair, I can only do what is agreed by the NCM. So the pressure needs to come from members.
So how do you change MSCC to make it the way you like it….?
Get involved with a Centre: Why?
You, as a member, are effectively a shareholder of a company. By joining a centre and electing the Secretary you are voting for a non-executive Director. The National Committee Meetings are effectively Board Meetings. The Officers, myself, the Chairman, Past Chair and Company Secretary are there to do the bidding of the Directors, as are the employees, the Finance Director, the Editor, the Membership Secretary and the Publicity Sales Manager.
ALL decisions are made by the Directors, well almost all. A few decision making processes have been delegated, by the Directors to the Officers.
If you don’t belong to a Centre you have no almost no voice. I don’t agree with that and I feel there should be a “Territory-less Centre” for all those who are unable to join a traditional centre to join. A "Country Members" Centre, if you like.
BUT although to get a real voice you should join a Centre all NCMs are open to ALL members and when there is a vote an individual member’s vote has as much weight as a Centre Secretaries.
Now at most NCMs only between 30% and 50% of the Centre Secretaries are present. So, if 20or 30 members arrived at a NCM they could have a powerful vote.
There are 3 NCMs a year, plus the AGM. Any member, with the support of I think 20 other members, can propose a resolution to be voted on at the AGM. If passed it happens. So to set up a “TM Virtual Centre” for example it needs a group of members to make it happen, put a resolution up at the next AGM and see what happens.
MSCC isn’t perfect, it has to evolve and adapt. there are factions and there is a deeply seated conservatism that seems to want to resist all change. But change is happening, you now have a Chair and a Vice Chair who see the need and want to take the club forward, not live in the past.
No single person, even the Vice Chair, can make change happen. I has to be driven by the members. I need you help and support. So do the Centre Secretaries.
