How about 12vdc trace heating wrapped around said instruments get it to switch on under 20°C.

Or mini 20mm fans fitted to the cases to circulate the air through?

Desiccant packs inside and sealing the gaps are another simple option.

I have a plastic film on the four small gauges which will have a small effect on the glass temperature. The big gauges have no film but rarely get any misting. It must be a function of internal volume.

Or heated glass faces for the instruments?
Common for marine applications, it is a film that is applied to the glass.
Possibly a lot cheaper than MMC's heated glass, too.

More, here... Hot Glass

One problem, it needs 120v, but inverters are not expensive anymore...

Why might this be?

It is quite reassuring to realise that MMC still engineer this feature even into their most recently produced vehicles.
Many years ago, when asking about the same issue on my 4/4, I received the "they all do that Sir" answer.

The instruments in my boat do the same thing. The answer is to crank up the aircon and take the water vapour out of the instruments. Alternatively fly blind. What do you really need the instruments for any way?
