The reality is that as medicine advances there are fewer and fewer causes of death.

Cancer has always been there: for the young, especially Children, cancer is no longer the scourge it was.
But for us as we age if there wasn't cancer what would take us?

My first boss, after University, used to say that his ambition was to be shot in the back by a jealous husband at the age of 92.

Not a bad ambition!

He made 92, but his death was a bit more conventional. A great mentor and friend, nevertheless.

Very news Derek, it's never easy to loose anyone close, and the big C seems to make it harder whenever it is. I lost my father some years ago, 6 months after he was diagnosed, and whilst we did not get on that well, the impact of how it happened made a deep impression. My condolences to you and your family.

A business associate and friend is going through Chemo at the moment. This is his second journey. A real blow when he was diagnosed with the second lot after 2 years of clear scans.

His email yesterday included the lines:
"Last chemo session is in November - how time flies when you are having fun!
I may even be available for a celebratory drink prior to Christmas."

I am looking forward to that drink!

There is something we can all do and that is to support one of the charities - Cancer Research or Macmillan. My own favourite is Macmillan after all the help they gave us 2 years ago when father in law needed it.

My friend's son has decided to come out in sympathy with his Dad.
He is having his head shaved for Charity on the day of the Rugby cup final at their local rugby club. This is no mean feat for a hair and image obsessed-teenager!

If anyone feels like donating - here is the link:

My sincere condolences. I lost my father to that bl***y desease, in his case was in the colon, in a warm september sixteen years ago. Yes, I know what it is, just eleven months and he was gone. Horrible feelings.

Sncere condolences for all your losses. It is a bastard of a disease but it's not all doom and gloom and there are success stories. My 2 1/2 year clear the other day!

Good luck to all going through and going alongside cancer, but remember we are now over the 50% of survive rather than not and long may the great work that all involved (doctors researchers nurses carers fund raisers and others) carry on with our support and gratitude.

Apologies for thread hijack.

Cheers
