That brings to mind 1980 we had been to our friends in the Black Forrest on returning My brother picked us up . I had left him my new Volvo he glanced at a case he had loaned me and an L shape cut was in it ( about an inch in size) . He went nuts so I asked for a claim form filled it in he said the case cost him £49-99 . So that was the figure written on the claim form . I said to him " I will give you the £49.99 and keep the case being as you say its so bad. Got into the car which was filthy and no petrol different to the way it was left. When he got the cheque he had sold the case to his pal for £29-99 who told me thats what he payed . I have not spoken to him since then and never will no time for liar's and thieves .

You do wonder why a company would choose to run in a business model where they know they are liable for £400 on a flight that they received £60 for !
I love the complexities of different industries. I only wish I had time on the planet to do more things across more industries and see how they tick.

Jetstar is the Qantas LCC and would be the Aussie equivalent of Easyjet/Ryan
I was waiting for an international flight out of Sydney one day and I heard an announcement. "Jetstar regrets that the aircraft for flight JQxxx to Denpasar [Bali] is unserviceable and the that the flight is cancelled. Passengers should proceed to the ground floor, collect their baggage and contact the airline to make new reservations"
Bail is our main overseas holiday destination and most people on that flight would be ordinary people off to holidays and weddings. I would guess at least 50% had no travel insurance. So whatever bookings they had would be trashed and they would lose their money.
For me the lesson was simple, avoid LCCs if your trip has any value. I've had QANTAS screw me over (as a Plat One) more times than Jetstar....

Thanks, bookmarked the page "The Customer" linked to. Don't need it right now, and hope to never need it, but I like to be prepared.
I think the amount of the refund is defined by statutes. I think that if your flight costs over £400, you get £400. I could be wrong. But I don't think Eurosystem0 is doing anything unethical here by getting a refund greater than his ticket price.

I did not intend to infer that he was scrounging, apologies if it read that way. I agree the liability is set by statute. It cannot be easy to choose the value given the diversity of flight costs these days. I just find it ironic that a £60 flight can gain you a £400 payment. I do believe it can reflect the trouble caused and also needs to be seen as a deterrent to the airlines to cancel non-profitable legs.
One of my team paid £650 for a flight from LHR to DUB as it was last minute and yet you can get to the Southern Edge of Europe for £120. However the penalty price is fixed to £400 ? Hmmmm.

In June Tina and I were flying back from Malaga to Luton. Tickets circa €60 each. On this trip, our late evening fight was delayed 4hrs and 10minutes.Immediately after flight,I contacted Easyjet customer Services- no reply. I tried to find a claim form at Airport- not available. Tried to find on-line claim process - there wasn't one. Gave up!!! Anyway, this week my daughter came across Flight Delays company who for 29% of the compensation, plus £25 plus open ended contingency cost would process a no win no cost claim. Unwilling to do this under their terms I tried Easyjet again. I now found the on-line Easyjet Delayed Flight form in accordance with EU Directive blah blah blah. Filled it in (10 minutes) and pressed the button. 5 days later informed by Easyjet we will be paid €400 "each" !!! So if it happens to you, you know what to do!!
So you got back 720 euro more than yopu paid out. Proud?

Amazing set of responses to my well intended tips for regular travelers. A. Be prepared to hold an airlines to account within the industry defined protocols which gives them a maximum 3 hour latitude on punctuality. B.Don't be tempted to use a delayed flight claims company with their high charges. It "appears" the airlines are willing (without any external pressure) to "step up to the plate" (response in 3 working days) to meet their industry "compensation obligations" just by filling in one of "their" claims forms. In return for this (I thought benign) offering to TM I get a mix of high minded moralistic comments tempered with some balancing views of other within the TM Community. Anyway each to their own. Those that are openly critical of the EU process and my gall, as a customer, for claiming against it, just bear it in mind when you are next screwed by the travel industry.

A few yrs ago we were in Turkey on hol. Evening flight home. Picked up from hotel and taken to airport. Saw on the info tv that flight delayed. Stayed like that for a while. Nobody from hol company to be seen. After enquiries at info desk still nothing concrete just bland comments. Eventually a rep started to circulate groups of us and we had to push forward to get info, no attempt to make sure everyone was updated. After a while we were told flight was cancelled and were being taken to a hotel. The plane had not taken off from uk. Nice hotel and early call next day for return flight. Point1......they knew all along that the plane had not taken off so why were we kept uninformed? point 2..... Passengers were obvioysly herded to be kept together in airpirt and not left in their hotels. Point3..... Obvioysly easier for them to herd us together as they could "manage" us better re overnight hotel. Point4....terrible customer communications..."keep em in the dark and avoid having to speak to them " attitude. I sympathise with the local reps but they were not very customer orientated , possibly on orders from those above? It was the lack of communication that was the worst aspect. What if people had medical issues etc? Nobody to turn to. I sent a suitable letter to company , not just complaint but highlighting shortcomings. Standard auto reply. Decided not to use them again.

This is an example of EU over regulation - a fairer system would be to cap a refund equivalent to the ticket price, but make sure the airline looks after you fairly during the delay
