Most of that is down to parents insisting on taking their little darlings to school by car rather than letting them catch a bus, walk or ride a bike like they do in the rest of Europe.

For sure air travel is to cheap and too easy.

Example:

When I flew to Houston USA in April 1973 the return open ticket, in economy using a discounted student rate it cost £120.00.
Today that would be £1416!
The actual air fare today on BA is £706.00, so half the price in real terms.

The EU states that a flight with 88 people on it releases 285gm CO2 per passenger Km. That is the same as Tarka!!

But I don't drive as many miles as I fly.

According to BA I've flown 670,000km with them over the last 20 years. With other flights let's say 1.34m km.
That is a lot of CO2, about 382 million gm....

And that is jut me, on flights. Add in cars, trains and boats...No, lets not.

No VAT on aviation fuel either........

Although air passenger duty was a feeble attempt to rake a bit in.

Decommissioning nuclear power stations is the ideal job for old people with insufficient pensions. Highly paid, slow and methodical work, and no need to worry about radiation triggering cancer in 20 or 30 years if you're already in your '70s smile

Oh heck! You can see that soon they'll be checking out MSCC membership as conscripts for decommissioning the nuke stations! scared

thinking If you take swmbo with you in the Morgan......that means that you're only half as polluting as air travel.

rofl

Su-bloody-perb Tim !!

And it's proactive thinking like that that'll get us out of the mire !

This is almost exactly a proposal that was made at Fukushima after the tsunami damage in 2011. A group of retired engineers, mostly in their 60s and 70s, volunteered to manage some of the more radiation-hazardous tasks in the shut-down of the nuclear plant. THe instigator of the plan, 72-year-old Yasuteru Yamada, commented that he had maybe 10 or 15 years left to live so with a nominal 20-year cycle before any radiation-induced cancer, he would already be dead of something else by then. http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-pacific-13598607

As it happens, their offer was not taken up by the authorities. But it was a genuine offer, made by the older generation to protect the younger. Bear in mind that many of these retirees would have been only too aware of the after effects of radiation exposure, as they'd have been youngsters in the years immediately after the bombing of Nagasaki and Hiroshima and have seen national news reports of the suffering. Knowing that, and volunteering to shield others from exposure to such risks, was quite the altruistic gesture, IMO.
