Hello All, I have a 1982 plus 8, mostly original paint, and some electrolysis in the wings, which are aluminium of course. Has anyone tried marine sacrificial anodes, as one would find on a yacht or aluminium punt?

If the electrolysis is on the beading it is the steel wire they use to form the bead

Not on a Morgan but I once made up and strategically attached some zinc anodes in the relatively damp environment of the rear wheel arches of a new ali bodied disco. An experiment to attempt to slow down the inevitable galvanic corrosion onslaught. My disco rotted just like every other disco on the road

Should work just fine so long as the areas you want to protect are kept immersed at all times! Might be a bit inconvenient.

The poor b who spent nine years in his car at the bottom of this pond was probably not worried about corrosion.

Thank you John, Roger, Calum and Peter for your replies. Peter's may not have been helpful, but was still a pleasure to receive. Calum's makes me think that if I can keep the wire free from saltwater it may check electrolysis more than an anode. Guess I can try an anode and see, even though i hear whatRoger had to say. Or I just let it rip, and buy new wings later. Maybe CRC......

Have been given a small anode by a friend with various cars to put in the radiator. Does anyone use these.? It will not stop the electrolysis in the wings of course.

Its hard to believe i know but most v6 and v8 engines still being produced for the Marine industry have raw water cooling(salt water running around head and block).The diesels run heat exchangers and the annode you have been given is probably an orbitrade zink annode that fits one of those.The raw water runs around the heat exchanger whilst normal coolant runs round the engine.I cant really see the point in fitting in a rad a good coolant does a pretty good job.

That should read most petrol v6 and v8 engines.

The protection dépends on the REDOX:

Fe -0.44V iron
Zn -0.76V zinc
Al -1.662V aluminium
Mg -2.372V magnesium

Fe > Zn > Al > Mg

I you want to protect aluminium and steel you have to find an anode whose Redox is fiewer, by exemple magnesium. Zinc will protect only iron or steel. Aluminium will protect zinc and steel and will become a sacrificial anode!

In ship yards zinc anodes are used because ship hulls are made of steel. They are generaly welded inside the hull.
