Would I be correct in thinking a five speeder has the front sidelights in the headlights?

That being so, anyone tried a LED replacement for the sidelight bulb and kept the H4 headlight bulbs? I've seen sites selling them, and at a suitable brightness to take part in the arms race for daylight running lights, and forums saying the heat from the headlight bulbs will kill them quickly.

My motive is actually to reduce the current consumption as although I've fitted an alternator, turning it slowly means I never get full output (I might if I went everywhere at 80 mph but that is not really a good idea with a 1930 car).

There is no way by the way, I can turn the alternator faster, without putting it on view - and for obvious reasons that is not happening.

I had LED sidelights in my Roadster for a while before changing the units to the Angel eyes.
I'd also heard that they would be fried by the heat so I fashioned a couple of shields out of "reflect-a-cool" aluminium insulation and fitted the bulbs with that between the sidelamp and headlamp to reduce radiated heat. I didn't use this arrangement long enough to form a conclusion.

What page? Just looked right through November's issue, and looked at October's too in case you meant that.

I do though rather switch off when Miscellany talks about lights as it has been rather a bit wrong on the subject in respect of legal requirements.

Thanks for the offer but I suspect doing so would hinder the overall effectiveness of the headlights, blocking part of the headlight bulbs view of the reflector.

So sorry, a very senior moment. The "article" to which I pointed you is in fact a letter/article in Septembers mag page 47. It covers the fitting of daylight driving lights plus up graded side lights.

Ah, not much use on the three wheeler as that article pertains to the 7" lights on a four wheeler, not the 5.25" lights my three wheeler uses.

I fitted LED side lights in the head lamp. Although I bought ones with a ceramic base because of potential heat problems they did not last long. The seller did not have replacements perhaps due to reliability problems but refunded my money. I was disappointed that they were not greatly brighter than standard.
