Agreed but when you are using a thin stainless bulkhead you can twist the flange down to fit and drill where you like....on an ally formed panel with laser cut holes??? Not making this up, it came from the factory!

And by the way I agree with you, the bloody things should be galvanised and then rejigged or dipped in a sacrificial holding jig......there is a solution out there that just needs finding.

The factory can say and does what it likes Colin, but i think it might be half the cost of galveing.

My 1994 4/4 has a galvanised chassis no sign of corrosion anware.Morgan started galvanising chassis because they had a problem with them rotting away if only painted.
To me this is yet another retrograde step.I wouldn't buy a Morgan with a painted chassis with all the water traps there are.
Very disappointing again MMC.

Chassis distortion due to heat. Likely story!

You can lift one corner of a bare chassis by a couple of inches or more before any of the other three corners move.

Perhaps galvanised Morgan chassis last too long and are converting to pretection that has a reduced life span. Then perhaps Morgan are going to ensure that they are the only source of replacement chassis and prevent anyone else making them, even for obsolete chassis. Then a price hike.

Or perhaps I am becoming cynical in my older age!

It's a shift in direction for sure. Much more of the fabrication is back in house, and it looks like the bulkheads will now be aluminium instead of stainless. One can only guess at the respective costs, but it's less likely that MMC would go for a higher cost option. So in theory we may see the revised chassis with aluminium bulkhead and floors, which should be lighter and might be a stiffer. I do sense that this evolution is leading to something but what and when is an imponderable.

Lets face it, most buyers of new Morgans won't be concerned about how the chassis has been treated, or what the bulkhead is made of.

Is this the same process as used on the ARP4?

Ouch...

Now I know there will be no new trad for me, I keep the old one! The chassis from my 2003 car is like new.

Land Rover quit galvanisizing Defender frames in the eighties. After that the cars corroded very quick...

I've been doing some googling on autophoretic coating, using keywords like 'issue', 'performance', 'problems', and 'corrosion', and the only hit implying there's a problem is that University of Michigan report.

I'm not a particular fan of galvanising chassis, it seems to me that the Morgan chassis needs a coating which is not inherently brittle.

Still, I expect it's an issue which actually isn't going to impact on many owners. My original 1986 chassis was simply painted, the car had a very hard life before I got it, and even so the chassis lasted well over 25 years before it needed replacement.

I see no reason why an autophoretic-coated chassis, properly looked after, wouldn't easily outlast this - and to be honest that's probably much longer than most owners will keep their cars.

I agree with that Tim - it won't affect many owners for sure.
