Richard of WAus. - thanks for the diagrams. No springs hey?? I think I will need to add a couple at either end of the cable. I note that some guru on Gomog recommends a spring at the axle end.

And re the rods - my concern was how tightening them would affect the calipers.. In any case I will experiment on one side to see how it works.

Brownbaker - easier said than done!.. I've pulled everything apart already. And besides, its 40 years old - who's to say that the previous "enthusiast" assembled it correctly in the first place?

Anyhow - thanks everyone - I will check bak here to see if any other good ideas turn up. An will definitely report back with the end result and solution. But don't hold your breath. These things take time.

I have a spring at the axle end....between the clevis and axle bracket.

If the calipers weren't designed to also operate as a handbrake, they will have no integrated return springs whereas the return springs are integrated within the brake shoe assembly on a drum brake.

Thankfully, the Sierra Cosworth/Granada calipers have an integrated return spring for the handbrake cable.

Dave. Yes - the disc brake conversion was not thought through. I'll have to see what can be done.

OK.. The news is good!

I removed a rear wheel and the disc to have a look. The handbrake function is as you know a drum with drum style shoes inside the disc.

Turns out the handbrake shoe is almost a circle and is in fact the spring. The actuators simply widen the diameter of the shoe.

The adjuster on the mechanical actuator was way too lose.

If anyone wants photos - I can oblige - but because its not a Morgan bit of kit, I wont bother putting them up unsolicited.
