OK. Its a 1975 Plus 8
New cable arrived by mail a few days ago. I notice the brass ferrule at the axle end of the cable is unsecured.

i.e - it looks like the wire needs to be soldered onto to it as has been done at the handle end.

Am I right in guessing that this this not done at time of manufacture in order to have a one-size-fits-all handbrake cable and that soldering is to be done in situ to ensure a good fit?

I have to say that soldering the ferrule onto the wire with the cable in situ is going to be a tad "sporting", with a guarantee of hot solder bits dribbling down my scalp.

Is there a better way? Has anyone used that epoxy "metal weld" putty stuff instead of solder?.

Springs: How many are there? Presently, I have none and think I need at least 1 maybe 2.

And lastly, can anyone point me to a complete handbrake assembly diagram online somewhere - from handle through to axle. I saw it about week ago somewhere (Gomog?) and now that I need to print it out I can no longer find it.

Better to fit the cable without oiling or greasing it otherwise the lubricant will contaminate the solder area. After soldering, remove and hang the cable, not the car, vertically and run oil down it if you feel the need to lubricate it.

It's another of the pleasures of owning a hand built car - not much is standard!

Yes indeed, I have perused that GoMog web page numerous times seeking enlightenment on the way to Morgan ownership nirvana. Sadly, it only tells half the story.

One other question.

Since my new diff was installed, I asked for the drum brakes to be replaced with discs, without actually thinking things through.

So now, discs don't have a return spring - bugger #1

and

I'm not sure how to adjust the hand brake rod lengths - bugger #2

Suggestions?

Niels, it's what you may consider as being a tactile relationship!

I have rear discs (Ford Cosworth Sierra/Granada) but with cables from the handbrake tree/compensator to the calipers.

I'll take a photo at the weekend; it might help with some ideas.

Rods are like the track rods....undo the nuts at each end and turn the rod.

More than surprised to read GoMog thinks one would break the cable if the handbrake lever was pulled too hard.
