Toyota and the car is Malaysian really. But seat audio soda are just badge engineered VW as my Riley Austin etc were rebadged bl. Nothing wrong with that except you have to ask yourself why they do it and the answer is that it allows them to make more money. Often by preying on badge snobbery.

It used to be that Spanish people bought SEAT cars (VW sub-brand now with different body panels on the same parts) etc etc. VW worked to increase their production volumes with parts manufacturers by grabbing market share through the purchase of Skoda and SEAT many years ago. It gave them new markets and volume benefits that should have been more loyal.

If I get out at Madrid and Barcelona airport now I mostly see Skoda Taxis. When I asked the driver why not SEAT anymore he said "Skoda is better quality and they offer a longer warranty" despite being the parts in a different skin. You do have to wonder about the reality vs perception gap. Yet when I get out at Prague I see - Skoda !

Skoda talk about seeing many conversions from MB E class estates to their new Superb estate. If you look at the price of an E Estate 220D SE on a 2-3 year lease (heavily price supported by MB) then they are not so different. Interestingly the Skoda has benefited from modern styling and greatly increased parts quality inside. If I compared them I would say the Skoda is nicer inside now.

An interesting thread. Do we really care whose engine is under the bonnet of our cars?
Is a Bentley any less of a car because it has a VW engine or an Aston Martin which has ( basically ) 2 Ford V6's joined together or indeed that Fiat built the beautiful V6 engine for the Ferrari Dino?
Whilst I love the purity of say a Jaguar XK engine or an Alfa Twin Cam, the global market now requires a whole different set of requirements with emissions being top of the list.
I for one think that the latest Ford Duratec in the Plus 4 is brilliant and, as we all know, Morgan have always bought in the best engines to suit their needs and we still love them.
I will now go and hide and await the flak !!

I wonder what it would be like to knock 2 cylinders off the 3.7 V6 and make a 2.5 V4. I bet it would sound fantastic.

it might sound rougher than you think. Ford 3.7 has a 60 degree bank angle, whereas to balance the primary forces in a V4 would need a 90 degree angle (or the addition of balancer shafts to overcome the mismatch of firing forces - usually an engineering bodge)

And talking about engineering bodges, are we aware that the Jaguar V6 uses the V8 block with 2 pistons omitted.

Quite correct Stuart. A 90° V is naturally balanced. I guess we will have to give it a couple of hits to spread the V another 30°.

Actually I have searched to see what V4 engines have been made in the past and they are very few and far between in car applications. Quite a few bike V4s of course.

In car engines there are the Lancia V4s which are more like a straight 4 with offset cylinders to make a compact engine. Other than that it seems V4s are not considered to be worth the effort. I don't think any V4 car engines are in current production.
